If you remember, Congressman Bishop stated in our recent debate that Utahs bad air quality is because of the topography. He also said that Utah would be better regulating its own clean air. This brings me to the Letter of the Week in The Salt Lake Tribune. Nelda Bishop underscores Bishops posturing of state control to be about as effective as a do nothing Rob Bishop in Congress. Nelda Bishop writes, with insight: I was interested that Rep. Rob Bishop in his recent debate expressed his opinion that Utah would do better regulating its own clean air because of the danger of the EPA getting it wrong. Apparently he does not know that the Utah Legislature doesn’t want this responsibility. During the last session, the Legislature passed a record number of clean air bills and appropriated money for some of the clean air projects, after a ground swell by citizens tired of dirty air. But the bill they did not pass, despite being recommended by the legislature’s own clean air task force, despite a push by Gov. Herbert, and despite overwhelming citizen support, was Rep. Becky Edwards’ bill to clarify that Utah’s Division of Air Quality can set standards more strict than EPA standards — a Utah solution for a Utah problem. The Legislature said no. How can we continue to put those in charge who, first, refuse to realistically acknowledge the problem and second, go on to fail to solve the problem? Power is a responsibility. It means that elected lawmakers have to be responsible for solving problems. As Nelda Bishop concludes: The only progress Utah has made until very recently was because the EPA mandated cleaner vehicle engines, more gas mileage, cleaner power plants, and more effort to get Utah’s out-of-compliance counties into compliance with clean air EPA rules. I say thank heaven for the EPA! Please LIKE and SHARE to say its time to elect a Representative to Congress who will be part of the solution - not the perpetuation of the problem. We need to work at both the state and federal levels to improve Utah air quality and make our air healthy again. Its not an either/or choice. In Congressman Bishops role as the Guardian of Gridlock everything is polarized. I will make sure that we do the right thing by working together, all of us, to protect our citizens, to find the best possible solutions and to get the job done. Not Left. Not Right. Forward!
