If you remember Daisy David Walker, think of her. If not, think - TopicsExpress

If you remember Daisy David Walker, think of her. If not, think of a very prim and proper lady. With hair neatly bound up, a very modest dress, and a slight, slim physique. She was a tour guide, a volunteer tour guide who loved her job and loved where she worked. She was giving us a tour of the Lincoln Center in New York City. As she took us into the auditorium. She carefully explained that the lack of obstructing columns, the perfect acoustics, there was no bad seat, you could see and hear everything. In fact she said, there was no need to use microphones. The building was just that perfectly designed. Then, she lowered her voice, almost to a whisper. In that soft tone, she explained that in return for her volunteer work, from time to time she was allowed in for a performance. When those lucky days came, she told us she would arrive early. She was not the kind to interrupt the performance, she was not the kind to interfere with the enjoyment of others. Once she had her seat. she would prepare for the performance. Knowing that a cough could be heard on stage, and knowing how a cough ruined the performance, she would take out a cough drop. She explained the crinkle of a wrapping could be heard clearly in the hall. Putting her hands in her pocket, she pulled out a cough drop. She peeled of the cellophane, and we each could hear the rustle as she opened the cough drop. She then looked at us, a very intent look. After she was sure we had understood this was serious business, she held her left palm out and tilted it upwards. With her right hand, she placed the cough drop in the upturned palm. She then explained, Once I have a cough drop ready, I a prepared for a cough should I feel it coming on. Now, I am ready for the performance. Some how, I think some one on stage should have broken the silence which followed. Applause, applause for such a woman. One trying to impress on tourist the need to respect both the performers and those enjoying the performance. This lady deserved applause.
