If you see lots of mature cyclists around in the next 5 days, make them feel welcome. LISMORE TO HOST PENSIONERS PELOTON A peloton of pensioners descends on the fair city of Lismore today Monday May 19 for the third annual Tour De North. Organised by a group of Lismore local riders, including Michael Flanagan and David Peiti, this years tour has attracted around 20 to 25 riders from the northern rivers region, Sydney and Canberra, Melbourne and South Queensland. With ages varying from almost 60 to 75, the peloton of men and women will spend the next five days riding the picturesque hinterland roads in and around Lismore. Its an extravaganza of healthy exercise, eating, modest drinking and most importantly lots of spirited conversations and companionship, says the enthusiastic organising committee. We will be spending our hard earned dollars in the local Lismore economy and hope to do so for as long as we can throw a leg over the bike. Safety is paramount, While we are all experienced and able bodied riders and motorists as well we recognise that some drivers might become impatient and try to pass a peloton that could stretch over 500 metres. Please look out for us and please avoid trying to pass when you cannot see the road clearly ahead. We will be on the lookout for you and will pull over and ride single file unless its safe to do otherwise. Give us a wave or a honk. We can handle abuse but we dont want anyone hurt - riders or motorists. After overnighting at the Dawson Motor Inn and stopping for a caffeine hit at Capello, the pensioners peloton will head out each day around 9am for Ballina, Newrybar via Federal and Woodlawn, Casino via Canniaba and the back roads between Coraki and Lismore, and Mullumbimby via Channon, Rosebank and Woodlawn. The final day will be shorter to enable visitors to return home. This is not a race but a fun activity showcasing our beautiful region and all it has to offer. The peloton will be shadowed at all times by a support vehicle clearly marked riders ahead . Its a fun occasion and were delighted that an event which started with around 6 riders has now grown into a full scale peloton which benefits riders and the local community,
