If you sit and watch wildlife for long enough, you pick up on some - TopicsExpress

If you sit and watch wildlife for long enough, you pick up on some things that you may not have noticed before - at least thats what happens to me. In this case, I was watching this great blue heron hunting along a lake shore in northern Wisconsin a couple weeks ago. When I first saw it, it was standing stock-still, with one leg up, dozing in the shadow of a large oak tree. But then it gradually starting moving down the shoreline towards me. The really interesting thing was that the bird never paused to hunt where the background foliage was dark. It only stopped where birch trees leaned over the water. Then it would stand very tall right next to the tree trunk, clearly mimicking the look of the tree trunks and waiting for a fish to swim just close enough. This pattern continued for almost an hour, with the bird only stopping next to birches, and you can see just how well the bird blends into the bark of the trees. Pretty smart for a bird, wouldnt you say?. Anyway, it was something I had never noticed before!
