If you told a farmer in North Dakota that he needed to learn to grow pineapples, oranges, and mangoes he would laugh at you. Those fruits dont grow there. If you were to tell him that he needed to know these things because he might move hed tell you if he moved to the tropics--unlikely as that may be--it would be because he had an interest in the tropics and he would pick up what he needed when he needed it. Likewise if someone were to tell my musician son that he needed to learn physics, chemistry, and biology, he would smile kindly, listen, and begin to shift from foot to foot before changing the subject. No. If he suddenly decided he wanted to be a chemist it would be because his interests suddenly and inexplicably changed and he was teaching himself chemistry. He would pick up what he needed as he went. As it is, hell sit at the organ until his butt is asleep and he cant walk when he gets up. So, I think thats the place for him right now. His intellectual landscape grows what it grows. It is suited to produce this type of fruit. It springs up here almost without effort and that is easily discerned just by letting him be for a while and then looking around. Whats springing up? Encourage that. See where it takes the child. See what he makes of it. Observe. Give plenty of opportunities to explore. Put them in the world. Observe some more. What do they love in the big, wide world? What do they naturally do? Give them more.
