Me: What advice do you have for a young collector on how to approach building an amazing collection of art and books Peter: The big mistake that people make is they buy in volume. What you want to do is set a budget for the year and then make 2-4 big purchases. An amazing collection isnt the biggest one in fact in many cases is based on a single piece. Jim: You also want to never buy for yourself (as an investment). If youre looking to build an amazing collection you have to think of your legacy. Buy the piece for your grandchildren. Structure your buying so that it creates opportunity for future generations. Then the conversation turned on how to start a museum in your office that allows you to purchase anything for your collection that you can depreciate over the next four years so that it is basically free.
