If you were around at the Institute today, you were in for a big surprise! We were thrilled to welcome Prime Minister Hon. Tony Abbott MP and the Minister for Health Hon. Peter Dutton MP to the Murdoch Childrens this morning, where they reaffirmed the Governments commitment to the Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF). The Prime Minister and Minister for Health were welcomed by our Director Professor Kathryn North, Associate Director Professor Andrew Sinclair and Chairman of the Board, Mr Leigh Clifford. Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Childrens Hospital Professor Christine Kilpatrick and Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes President Professor Doug Hilton also took part in the visit, which included a tour of the Institutes stem cell laboratory- where the Prime Minister had a look at some amazing beating heart cells under a microscope- and a brief meeting. In a press conference, Mr Abbott reiterated the importance of medical research on the Governments agenda. Medical research is vital for a sustainable health system and over time medical research is vital for a healthier, happier and more prosperous society and indeed for a stronger economy, Mr Abbott said.
