If you would like to know more about Carole Pilon: MEMORY OF BODIES Movement and the morphology of bodies are the driving forces in my creative work. For years now, I have contemplated the cyclical phenomenon that characterizes the whole plant kingdom. Symbol of both life and death, this duality in nature unfolds as well in a temporal dimension, evoking the ephemeral and the perpetual transformation of the universe. So far, my work has focused specifically on plant bodies, because of the multiple metamorphoses generated by the reproductive cycle. But a broader vision of these mutations has led me to see a parallel between various components of nature. It would seem that all forms of life, be they plant or animal, are inevitably transformed by outside elements that impinge on and therefore affect them. There are curious similarities in some of the morphological behaviour of animal bodies and plant bodies. Misfortune or simply the vicissitudes of life inflict strains, scars, cuts and distortions. For a tree encircled in rock and hands altered by genetic tyranny, the struggle is the same: nature’s thrust is both conciliatory and powerful. Despite chaos, the body uses a thousand and one stratagems to restore the equilibrium and harmony that preserve it. In its morphological mutations and the unpredictable course it takes, nature reveals an amazing and unsuspected power to adapt. This powerful and at the same time troubling manifestation holds great fascination for me. My work does not strive to reproduce this phenomenon; instead, it is an attempt to express its strength and spontaneity through a playful and poetic look. Disconcerting or amusing, attractive or unsightly, these metamorphoses nonetheless transcend the memory of the bodies and bear within them snatches of a story, an adventure.
