Its the page of the Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway in Vineyard Haven. Since 1980 this boatyard has been designing, building and restoring sailing vessels, power boats and skiffs exclusively of wood. And not just of any old wood, but of timbered wood -- plank on frame -- the way recreational boats were almost always built before the era of fiberglass. And the way great vessels, such as Old Ironsides or the clipper ships of the nineteenth century, always were. Nat Benjamin and Ross Gannon have established themselves has leading practitioners of the art and craft of traditional boatbuilding and design -- not just on this coastline, not just across the country, but around the world. The boats they build and restore are lovely to look at, easy to sail, and durable in every way imaginable. And they have a splendid crew of young builders working with them at the two shops they keep on and near Vineyard Haven Harbor. When people speak of how things once were on Marthas Vineyard, what they often mean -- at root -- is what Gannon and Benjamin still is and does, in practice and in spirit.
