If youre in the indie comics business to make a ton of money, Im going to save you some time. Get out now. If youre in the indie comics business to have fun and meet great creators and fans, youll be successful. I have no desire to live in total poverty in order to follow my dreams. That is the biggest scam known to man, so dont fall for it. Plan, plot, and calculate because dreams rarely pay the bills unless youve done that in advance. Learn to be humble and to listen to constructive criticism without sinking into depression or allowing your ego to get in the way. If everything you do isnt better than what you did the day before, something is wrong. Ive had artists ask me to critique their work, and Im professional and honest in what I say, but they get defensive. When Im critiquing work, Im telling you what needs to happen in order for me to pay you for your services. They get defensive, then Ill bump into them two years later and their stuff is exactly the same as it was two years prior. Invest in yourself, invest in time, and invest in knowledge. Do you know who I am better than? Im better than ME yesterday. If youre not in that frame of mind, youll always be in a repetitive cycle of failure Use good judgment and find people wholl work with you. Ive offered people a regular paying job in comics(not pocket change either), and theyve turned me down because it wasnt what they wanted to make. Most of them arent even in the business anymore because they set themselves up for failure right off the bat. Theres a huge gap between what youre worth and what someone is willing to pay you most of the time. Dont work for peanuts, but dont expect big money with no resume, no matter how good your material is. Use every opportunity as a stepping stone, but choose your projects wisely. Dont fall for people selling snake oil. Lastly Id like to say, dont give up. Work, work, and network, network. These are my thoughts, take them or leave them.
