If youve been out in the garden this weekend, sewing seeds or perhaps doing some weeding, have a look at these images of a womens vegetable garden in the Kerr Mailla community, Gambia, which Heather T and Trustee Hannah visited last year. This women’s garden was developed thanks to a successful Community Action Plan, put together by participants of the village’s literacy classes with support from our Gambian partner organisation, AVISU. All the women of the village work in the garden, which allows them to feed their children healthy food (a mother of 10 children told us she particularly appreciated this) and to sell some of the produce so they can buy clothes and medicine for their families. The womens vegetable garden at Kerr Mailla is a great example of how literacy circles result in practical solutions to problems faced by rural communities. By supporting Village Aid, you are helping people to help themselves out of poverty in rural West Africa.
