If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah, today’s passage is Isaiah chapter 44 and the devotion is taken from chapter 44:19-20. “No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, “Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?” Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?” Have you ever heard a person say something like “well, he is just going to believe what he’s going to believe and nobody’s going to change his mind no matter what the truth is”? In this chapter Isaiah is making the argument that idols are man-made and therefore meaningless in somebody’s relationship with the living God. The argument goes something like this: a person goes out to the woods and cuts down a tree. Half of the tree he cuts up for firewood and the other half of the tree is used to make an image of a God. He burns up one half and bows down to the other half. How foolish this person is. How can he believe that the part that wasn’t used for fire could be any different than the part he used to make an idol? They both are just wood. Such a person has deluded himself and his become incredibly gullible. People believe lies all the time. During the Middle Ages the science of alchemy was incredibly popular. Changing a useless metal into gold was a past time that many used thinking they would get rich. They deluded themselves into thinking they could modify God’s chemistry and physics. People today are the same way. They discount God’s word for years only to find out that they have been deceived. Recently an article in the newspaper reported that a scientist made the statement that a small chip would be placed in every human’s hand.Without that radio frequency identifier chip he or she would not be able to participate in any human commerce such as buying or selling things. The book of Revelation makes it clear that in the end times men and women without some kind of mark on their hands or heads will not be able to participate in any commercial venture. They will not be able to buy, sell items without this identifying mark. I am not saying that these chips which the scientist predicted would be in all this in the near future are the mark of the beast. What I am saying is that the naysayers about the power of government to control your every action is rapidly becoming truth. A hundred years ago this it did not seem possible. Five or ten years from now it may not only be possible but actually implemented. 5-1-2014
