Ill be damned. And not for the first time. My name is permanently engraved on that handbasket. Be that as it may, Im continually surprised by songs I know that I didnt know were covers of other peoples songs. I dont want to go into a long litany, but I did want to mention the latest one Ive seen. A song Ive loved since I first heard it about 1973. As Im sure you older folk remember, a lovely singer named Roberta Flack had a great career about that time. Such classics as The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing Me Softly With His Song. Well, I cant say for sure about Killing Me Softly, but I can not unlearn the fact that First Time was not original with the sainted Roberta. Roberta, my beloved singer, this in no way diminishes you in my eyes. Quite the contrary, as much as I love Peter, Paul, and Mary, their version (creditable though it is) only makes you shine even more.
