[Ill bet few recall Camille Cosbys essay about their sons death...] In January of 1997, her son Ennis was murdered Dr. Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby, ``America taught my sons killer to hate blacks, was published last Thursday in USA Today, after Mikail Markhasevs conviction for Ennis Cosbys murder. Her premise: ``I believe America taught our sons killer to hate African-Americans . . . After . . . Markhasev killed Ennis William Cosby on Jan. 16, 1997, he said to his friends, `I shot a nigger. Noting that Markhasev hadnt been exposed to blacks in his native Ukraine, Cosby reasoned that the racial atmosphere in this country taught him to hate - noting that in 1995, he had stabbed a black man. She listed examples of Americas racist culture - ranging from the slave-owning patriots who grace our currency to Christianitys habit of re-creating holy people in ``images of whiteness. Reaction was mostly negative. It provided insight into the white defensiveness that prevails whenever blacks mention racism in the present tense, rather than as a footnote to Americas distant past. Most of the responses attacked Cosby for playing the race card. The backlash breaks down into three categories: How can she claim racism when shes so rich? Accusing her of racial paranoia, Salon magazine columnist David Horowitz asks how she can ``deliver a racist diatribe against a nation that has showered her with privilege, making her family wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of almost anyone alive, including the very objects of her hate? Horowitz believes Camille Cosby should be so grateful to white America for her wealth that she dare not speak up about her sons murder.
