Ill spare you the it was a great year, thanks for being a part of it scrapbook thingy, but yeah, it was a great year and thanks for being a part of it! Stacey Sherman and I got engaged, and that alone was great! My brother Eric Shiffman also got engaged, and well soon be officially welcoming Michelle Kleiman into the family (shes basically been a part of it as long as I can remember, though). Our family is scattered all over the country, but we got to all be together twice- in Hawaii in June to celebrate moms 60th birthday, and in Naples over Thanksgiving. Im sad I didnt get to get to Lake George this year, but at least I still got to see family. I also got to spend a lot of time with friends scattered all over, and Nicholas K. Dulvy and Rachel Kaylee Pendergrass even came to visit and stayed with us! Our guest room is always open if anyone wants to get away this winter, it was about 80 degrees this week... It was a great year for travel, too! I got to go to the Bahamas twice- once to tag the biggest tiger sharks Ive ever seen with Neil Hammerschlag Austin Gallagher Christian Pankow Emily Rose Nelson and Duncan Irschick, and a trip to the Atlantis with Stacey where we got engaged! I got to finally achieve a lifelong goal of swimming with great white sharks in South Africa! I got to see Loch Ness (which incidentally looks *EXACTLY* like Lake George) and the Scottish Highlands! Hawaii with the family was awesome, and though perhaps not in the same league as the other trips in terms of tourist value, I always love the American Elasmobranch Society conference (this year in Chattanooga), and any trip back to North Carolina is reason to celebrate. I also went home to Pittsburgh and attended a wedding in New Orleans. So yeah, I earned preferred frequent flier status on two different airlines this year. I had 11 scientific papers published this year, was cited 43 times by other scientists (according to Google Scholar), and presented my research at 3 scientific conferences, and led workshops at another conference and at Sea Grant Week. I earned 2 grants, funding the rest of my Ph.D. research. I wrote 50 blog posts and another 25 or so articles for the popular press. I was interviewed more than 50 times, including profiles of me so nice that they made my mom cry by Tara Haelle, Craig Pittman, and my alma mater Duke University. I was awarded the first (and I suppose sadly the last) ScienceOnline service award, as well as the Florida Marine Science Education Associations John Beakley marine educator of the year award, and the Florida Outdoor Writers Association scholarship. I was proud to help not only run research trips for our lab the RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program, but to help Catherine Macdonald train our undergraduate and Masters interns. Youre an amazing group of people that make me excited to go to work every day! I helped the IUCN Shark Specialist Group as a new member of the cross-cutting committee, specializing in communications strategy. I continued to help the American Elasmobranch Society as a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors (the youngest member), and was re-elected to another term! I continued to help the Society for Conservation Biology as a member of the Social Media and Outreach committee, and as a member of the International Marine Conservation Congress communications committee. My New Years Resolution for 2015 is simple: work so hard that in comparison, I remember 2014 as a year where I didnt get enough done.
