Ill start off by saying that I dance with pretty incredible, talented, and amazing people. I love my Rioult family!! And now the story: Setting: Festival Internacional de Santa Lucia, Monterrey, N.L., Mexico. Mid -September 2014. Approx. 8:30 pm. Prologue: We had already had a full day of dancing. Open class at the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza followed by a full tech and dress rehearsal at the stage at Festival Internacional de Santa Lucia, a beautiful outdoor stage at Explanada de Santa Lucia. At 30 minutes until the show, the seats were filled. It started to rain and the umbrellas and ponchos were pulled out and people continued to walk in. We opened the show with Celestial Tides set to Bachs Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 followed by On Distant Shores... with original music by Aaron Kurnis. Story: Approximately 5 mins before the end of the piece, I roll upstage and feel something on my leg and pull it off. The final duet is beginning and immediately my leg is in shooting pain; Ive rolled over a bug and its stinger is in my leg. Immediately the thoughts start flying: Is my leg swelling? Ive never been stung by anything...am I allergic?? How do I get offstage? Im supposed be dead right now! Etc... I finished the piece and ran offstage to start changing for Bolero. I start looking around for someone to help me who can understand whats happening. Immediately, the other company members were there to help. One of the staff from the festival pulled the stinger out of my leg and its starting to swell slightly. Its pretty painful and I begin wondering if I can make it through Bolero. Holt comes over and says, Do you want me to do your part and Brian do into his and I think for two seconds and respond: Are you sure?? Holt had done one run in rehearsal with apprentices, but never with this cast. Sure enough he was ready and everyone got into their costumes and I began icing my leg. I watched my amazing co-workers perform a fantastic Bolero and I had an first in my career. Epilogue: Im fine. They killed it. And we had an overall incredible night in Monterrey! We are so excited for tomorrow :)
