Im Meteorologist Scotty Powell with your midday update! Good afternoon everyone! What a beautiful day we are having, very spring like. I know lots of people are off work today, so make sure you take time to get outside and enjoy it, as we wont see temps like these in some time. Today shorts, tomorrow snow flurries. Under mostly sunny skies, and a pleasant southerly breeze we have seen temps sky rocket into the into the 60s. Here are some temps from around the area: Morganton 60 F, Valdese 59 F, Salem 62 F, Chesterfield 61 F, George Hildebran 63 F, Jonas Ridge 49 F, Table Rock 53 F, Glen Alpine 58 F, Brendeltown 58 F, Marion 57 F, Lake James 58 F, Woodlawn 55 F, North Cove 52 F, Nebo 56 F, Old Fort 57 F, Ridgecrest 53 F, Black Mountain 51 F, Lenoir 60 F, Gamewell 61 F, Rhodehiss 61 F, Granite Falls 62 F, Sawmills 62 F, Hudson 63 F, Dudley Shoals 62 F, North Lakes 61 F, Patterson 58 F, Coffees Gap 51 F, Blowing Rock 47 F, Hickory 58 F, Mountain View 60 F, Vale 58 F, and Long View 61 F. Tonight we see increasing clouds from the next clipper system to affect our area. We should see rain/snow transition to all snow in NW Burke, McDowell and Caldwell Counties tomorrow morning around 8 am. The front then moves over the foothills, I think we see mostly rain showers changing to snow showers in the afternoon. This has a potential bust as we could see no snow what so ever. If we do see snow, we could see a deformation zone set up, and someone could get real lucky with snow fall totals, that being said it could happen anywhere from Morganton to Raleigh, so pinpointing where that happens is like throwing darts at a moving target blindfolded. I think the safe bet right now is to see flurries and snow showers that may give us a dusting of snow. What we know for sure is cold air will make its way into the area, and we will be below freezing from Tuesday afternoon - Thursday, possibly Friday. Long term we see no storm, but we do see the elements that could make a storm with a southerly storm system cranking up, we see a low pressure system over Tennessee and one over the panhandle of Florida. If we can get those two storms to phase into one, than maybe we see the snowstorm we have all been wanting. The time frame would be Sunday into early next week. So we have time to watch it and see what becomes of it. But if you are of the praying kind, you may want to send a prayer for the systems to phase into one :) Enjoy the warm today, and prepare for sub freezing temps midweek! have Have a blessed day!
