Im So Shy! It Stops Me From Volunteering!? If you are either a first timer or an experience volunteer, certain things have to be in place to get the most pleasure and satisfaction from helping others and yourself. What you are reading on this our group page is years of experience from many people that want to share there knowledge to you If you have a question, just ask anyway, this is how I learnt from listening to the people that I was helping, the people that were supporting me, the people that gave me great advice like Joan Brandon from Barking and Dagenham and Kim Guest from Havering who are the best placed and my family and friends. Never forget where you have come from and its a group of volunteers that make things happen, no one person can do it all and alone. Things and lessons are learnt but never give up on what makes you feel good as volunteering certainly does give a buzz. Remember, best practice wins in the end, which is about how your group operates, such as child protection, vetting members, finance and general operation procedures, however if you think something isnt quite right you should check with the committee or officers of your organisation in the first instance. Remember shyness will lead to confidence, if you allow it to, dont be afraid to ask. Not everybody is the same and you have leaders and followers but its a TEAM effort that gets the right results. Together Everyone Achieves More GOLDEN RULES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If you really want to volunteer, all you have to do is do it.. 2.Getting over shyness is really hard To start with, try talking to someone new. Maybe someone on your bus, or someone from work who you dont know very well. There isnt any audience, and you dont have to talk about anything important, just small talk. Once you feel ok about talking to people you dont know very well, you should then be ok with talking to people you dont know at all (like people at volunteer places). It will get easier the more you practice and you will feel better about yourself when you show yourself that you can do it. . 3.Dont let your shyness get in the way of what you want to do. 4. Volunteer somewhere where you wont have to much interaction with people, like at a library or something. Volunteering will help you come out of your shell. 5. Talking on the phone helps, because they cant see you, and you cant see them..this way you will learn verbal skills, and how to interact over the phone...
