Im a big fan of all of chef Brian Hills establishments which include Francine and Seabright, both in Camden, and Rockports Shepherds Pie. On a recent Monday evening my husband and I were exhausted and debating what to do for dinner. Shepherds Pie seemed like a good, cozy, no-fuss option which was confirmed when we were able to sneak in and grab seats the bar with no wait. Dennis, the longtime bartender and bar manager at Shepherds Pie is a wealth of knowledge and an absolute delight. I always look forward to dining there, particularly when he is tending bar. Ethan and I opted to split one of the highly coveted, limited edition Marshall Wharf Sea Belt Scotch Ales brewed in nearby Belfast and shared a first course of fabulous, spicy lobster ceviche. The generous portion of ceviche was delicious and the flavors fresh and bright. For our main course we split another item, the restaurants signature shepherds pie, which absolutely does not disappoint. It is served in a piping hot cast iron skillet and topped with fried onions. Every bite was absolutely delicious and was complemented by the second round of beers we selected, both from Moat Mountain brewery in New Hampshire. We had an amazing time but our exhaustion kicked in and we decided to take dessert — a parsnip cake with decadent creme fraiche and a poached pear — home with us. While we waited for our dessert to be packed up, Dennis produced a bottle of his latest batch of house-made limoncello and poured us a little taste, it was a wonderful end to a perfect, simple meal. The atmosphere, great service and fine food were the essence of dining locally and exemplify what I love about living in a small community (especially in the off season). I also cant begin to say enough about the restaurant industry professionals in this area. Were very lucky that many of our local establishments are staffed with dedicated professionals (both front and back of the house) who are adept, passionate, knowledgeable and genuinely enjoy sharing the restaurant experience with their patrons.
