Im a hiring manager. Im hiring for 2 positions and the resumes I am reviewing are not so great. Here are my Top 10 Resume Writing Tips: 1. Be yourself! Your personality should be able to shine through the details of your career. 2. Quit Using Bullets! Thats so 1990s. These days try using a great summary format that reads well. Hiring managers look for how well you use sentence structure and know proper syntax. 3. Proofread. Then, proofread again! You almost never catch your own mistakes. So, write your resume and edit it. Then, take a nap and come back and read it. Youll see where you went wrong. 4. Stay Relevant! If the job youre applying for is in accounting, demonstrating how well you stocked shelves wont do any good. 5. Brag a Bit! Every hiring manager wants to know how youll do on their team. The best way to help them envision this is to demonstrate proven results in your previous experiences. Use numbers to illustrate just what youve done! Real hiring managers love numbers. 6. Use More Than 1 Page! ...but only if you need to. If you have a career path thats progressive, chances are, youve got lots to highlight. You dont have to list every single detail, but if you need to use more than 1 page - its okay. Just dont go over 2 pages. 7. Watch X-Men! Those types of movies are full of action. Resumes read so much better when theyre full of action words like championed, led, directed, managed, guided, etc. You get the idea. No one wants a boring candidate - so show them what youve done. 8. Independent Clauses! Its important to know the proper use of a semi-colon. Learn it and use it. Most people dont know it and if the watchful eye of a hiring manager sees that youve done it correctly, theres a green check mark for you! 9. Exclamate (sic)! When you write your thank-you letter, always use this as the subject: Thank You from [enter name]!!! It shows excitement and if the hiring manager has interviewed any other candidates, you can bet your bottom dollar they didnt exclamate. Yes, another way to stand out! 10. Hiring Managers Use Google! Yes, we will look you up. Make sure your professional profiles are UNLOCKED and your personal profiles are LOCKED. If you dont mind your potential new boss knowing that you could be a culture misfit, then carry on. Any questions? E-mail me - dariuswilliams2012@yahoo
