Im a huge fan of spicy food. Its been an important part of my diet for pretty much all my life. Growing up in SoCal, my body was built on pastrami burritos, enchiladas, salsa verde, and kung pao chicken. I consumed Tapatio, Sriracha, and Cholula the way a lot of kids have Heinz and Frenchs. In Japan, I cannot get the foods with which Im familiar. I might be able to make some of them, or at least approximations of them. I can get frozen tortillas from Costco that are okay. I cant really get a tortilla press here, and Im not sure Id really want to anyway. Pickled jalapenos are the only option, and theyre in very limited quantities and costly. I can get a Sriracha sauce, but its different. Its sweeter, and carries less heat than the stuff made in California. Dont even get me started on pastrami or hot dogs. The Japanese dont really like spicy foods, by and large. Even Japanese foods youll get in America that come spicy, they dont here. I went to a local Mexican restaurant here, and ordered the spiciest thing on the menu (with a warning!), and it was about a Taco Bell Medium sauce. But Ive found an answer. In every single grocery store, even the little mom and pop places, you can always find one Indian dish, and one Thai dish kit. Usually its a curry. But sometimes you can find marinated meats. Theyre spicy. Sometimes, theyre holy shit spicy. But they definitely whet my desire for that particular taste. Soon, I need to find some big get-together with a potluck or something, so I can come up with an excuse to get together everything necessary to make proper SoCal pastrami burritos, though.
