Im a star! CBC Radio Noon had a call-in on Old Wives Tales. I sent this in and they read it. I was 25 when we married, never considered myself naive but evidently had never questioned my Moms knowledge. My new bride offered oatmeal for breakfast one July morning. Oh, you cant eat oatmeal in the summer., I advised her. Why not?, she asked. Having quickly examined the logic of this statement for the first time in my life, I was hesitant to answer, embarrassed by the knowledge that I had been had for so many years. Trying to avoid exposing my naivety, I just mumbled, Buzzom, buzzom., hoping I wouldnt be pressed for a reply. What? Why not?, she pressed. Head and voice both low, I said Because youll get hives. Erupting with laughter she asked Who ever told you that? Mom. I said, and I believed that for the last 20 years. In reality, those were the days before instant oatmeal when you had to stir constantly for 15 minutes, which I suspect Mom didnt want to do on a hot summer day. Maximizing her entertainment from the issue, she phoned my brother. Do you eat oatmeal in the summer? Oh, no! Youll get hives.
