Im a year late here, but finally saw this stunning achievement and fully realized vision of Spike Jonze with great help from Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson last night. The movie is completely immersive thanks to Jonzes richly satisfying color palette (eat your heart out, Wes Anderson) and narcotically mellow depiction of the humane place technology has in our future. That gives way to deep meditations on the nature of consciousness, love, fear, and existence. Phoenix, as usual, is mysteriously compelling and somehow not boring or tiresome despite being on screen for basically the whole film and playing a character whose sincerity and sweet nature borders on creepiness (which is addressed in the film). Johansson gives the most human performance of her career playing a computer operating system and never appearing on the screen (and thats a compliment, not a joke at her expense). This one is haunting and life-affirming in the same way as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which is not something I say lightly. Whatever ideas you might have about this film based on the man falls in love with his computer one sentence summary, put them aside and see this if you havent.
