Im about to head off to my second international conference in less than three weeks. Lots of people are freaking out about Ebola. There are over 300 million people in this country. As far as we know, precisely one person has died in this country from the disease. One. And two more, who provided medical care to that man as he lay dying are now infected with the virus. So, three people out of more than 300 million people in this country are ill with this horrible, very serious illness. As far as we know, no one has caught the disease through airborne transmission (no one has caught the disease from being sneezed on). Ive got no intention of coming into contact with the bodily fluids of anyone while Im on the three airplanes Ill be on tomorrow, and likewise while Im in Vancouver with scientists from all over the world. Or on the three airplanes on the way back. I have no concern about my personal safety related to Ebola. You should have no concern about your personal safety related to Ebola. You should get a flu shot, as itll greatly reduce your risk related to that disease which actually kills thousands of people in this country every year. You should make sure that your vaccinations, and those of your kids, are current. You should support work being done to contain Ebola both here and around the world. You should wash your hands frequently. And you shouldnt worry about catching Ebola yourself. Calm down. Seriously.
