Im all crazy about Serial, which documents tough-but-fair, capable cops. I love Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a show about very lovable and committed police officers. I can go to Hulu/Netflix and see all kinds of shows that illustrate the dangers of the job, and how - by and large - police officers are willing to risk their lives for others: Law and Order; The Wire; every single CSI spin-off... I can see movies that do the same thing, and tons of them: Se7en, Super Troopers, A Time to Kill - and pretty much every other Grisham-novel-turned-film... There are still films, shows, and documentaries being made about the heroic first-responders - many of whom were cops - who sacrificed everything to run into the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. This isnt my version of Some of my best friends are cops... - its to say that our culture is saturated with positive images of police officers. And the continued - and dedicated - protests around #BlackLivesMatter is calling for justice, not hating on cops or their families. Asking for justice and an unfettered look at our criminal justice system - and exercising our First Amendment rights - is as American as it gets.
