Im approximately the happiest person on earth because laundry. So, theres always been a laundry room in my building. But. It didnt accept coins, it only accepted tokens. You could only buy the tokens in the apartment building office. If you happen to work 9-5 outside of the neighborhood, youll never ever be near the office when its open. I got in the habit of just going to the laundromat. Habit = every few weeks, because I hate going to the laundromat. My laundry became a force that interfered with my regular activities. Psychologists say everyone feels blue now and then but if your sadness interferes with your regular activities, it might be depression. My laundry interfered with my activities. It was depression. And then, one day, I was sick. I stayed home from work. I realized the apartment office was open. I bought some tokens!! Yay, I had tokens now. Its been amazing. Last night, I still had some tokens. I went to the laundry room with my laundry and my tokens. Suddenly! The machines no longer have token slots. Suddenly, they have shiny new card slots. What?! What card do you stick in here??? Well, a card that you can buy from this blinking, shiny machine on the wall. What?! What do you have to stick in here to get this laundry card? A credit or debit card. I have one of those!! I can use this laundry room ANYTIME I WANT, FOREVER. I run back for my debit card. Stick it in the machine. The machine cant receive something from the host. Over and over. And over. And I go back home, sadly, head hung low, laundry stinking along behind me. I plan to make the rather long trek to the laundromat last night, but I dont go. I end up going to bed for the longest night of the year and wake up this morning resigned to making a big laundry-and-groceries trek. This means loading up my cart with laundry, walking to the laundromat, unloading and starting the clothes, taking my cart to the grocery store, buying groceries and loading it up, going back to the laundromat and putting the clothes in the drier, walking all the way home and unloading my groceries and then taking the cart back to the laundromat to get the clothes and then walking back home again. I dont want this. But I need things and clothing. But I think: What if. What if I go back over there and try this card thing again and it just... works. And then thats what happened. And now I have a Laundry Card. And it has money value on it. And my clothes are over there washing, and my cart is empty, and now I only have to walk to the grocery store, once, and back, once. And I can have groceries, cat litter, and clean clothes, ALL IN THE SAME DAY. Its the most. Wonderful time. Of the year.
