Im beginning a new thread, though this is really an extension of the current discussions re: the Depp/Burton movie. Okay, this will eventually lead to a question, but I need to write a little background first. Bear with me please. Star Trek: The Motion Picture nearly killed the Star Trek franchise for all time, it was so bad. Then, along comes Harve Bennett, then later Rick Berman, and the franchise takes off like wildfire. Look where it is now, with JJ Abrams holding the sacred torch. What revitalized ST after the disastrous Motionless Picture was Bennetts regard and respect for story and character. He became familiar with the original characters, embraced them, then developed a story around them that portrayed them as Star Trek fans expected in the first place. The fact that Ricardo Montalbon reprised his role as Khan and Spock sacrificed his life for his comrades only helped make the movie the huge success it was. Now, refocus to Dark Shadows. The Depp/Burton movie can easily be likened to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It HURT the franchise terribly, but I dont think it killed it. There are always possibilities, Spock said. With that said, how do you, dear readers and faithful Dark Shadows fans, think a NEW DS movie could revive the franchise? Do we retell the origins of Barnabas yet again? Or do we find a way to thread the Barnabas story into the backstory, but move forward with an entirely new story, like Harve Bennett did with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which relied heavily on ST lore, but told an all new story? Personally, I think an all new story is the way to go, with the old stories being the historic basis. It would be impossible to sell a DS movie starring the few original cast members who are still alive. Its been almost 50 years since DS first premiered on ABC. So, an all new cast is obvious... but, like Ricardo Montalbon did in Star Trek II, the living original cast members COULD play important parts in a new story. For instance... Quentin (now married to Maggie) become the new patriarch and matriarch of Collinwood. David and his wife become the focus of the story. A host of new characters play into it. Im afraid Lara Parker as Angelique might not be believable, unless you could effectively explain her aging, then give her a new and much younger protege to manipulate... like Davids daughter maybe... unbeknownst to David? Anyway, I just want to hear peoples thoughts about how a modern producer who actually gives a damn might look at DS the way Harve Bennett looked at Star Trek with the thought of breathing new life into the franchise. I dont particularly want to see elaborately detailed story ideas... just thoughts on whether or not the old stories should be the focus of a reboot, or a blend of the old (as backstories) with all new stories. Its possible that enough talk here could lead to something that could be ultimately presented to Warner Brothers as a proposal to give DS another chance. Who knows... There are always possibilities.
