It left with a flash of light and a great explosion that came from the north. The earth beneath her feet quaked and a fire rose up that spread and consumed everything as far as the Big Town in the west. But it wasn’t the sun that caused the Great Explosion. Nobody knows what did, but once it was all over the sun was just…… gone. Yes, it was gone, leaving Kabrina with only one question on her lips; where did it go? For centuries, the people of her world have held to the belief that they are the sole inhabitants of the universe. They say there are no worlds beyond the Wall that encloses their home; all there is, is darkness. Most people live in this denial. They refuse to believe there could be something else out there. But Kabrina will soon know the truth; there is something out there and whatever it is holds the power to destroy them all. Out of the Darkness came the White Guards and the Overseer. In their time of need and desperation, the people of Kabrina’s world embraced these cold strangers and the supplies they brought with them. Was there anything beyond Kabrina’s world? The Overseer said there was nothing, nothing but darkness. Where did they come from? They claimed to come from nowhere. Twelve years after the Great Explosion, Kabrina and her brother Byler—made fatherless by the Great Explosion and motherless by the outbreak of a strange disease—struggle to survive in an unfeeling, poverty-ridden world of corruption. There seemed to be no hope. But just as the Overseer came out of the Darkness, so would the Malformed arise out of the hopelessness. The Malformed were children, children brave enough to band together against the Overseer’s Guards and maybe even strong enough to resist them. The Malformed were mutants who could do anything from breathing fire and flying to turning invisible and walking through walls. These children are the people’s only hope for a brighter future as the Overseer’s oppression grows stronger and threatens the very existence of their home. But as many of them blindly deny that such a danger even exists, is such a hope anything more than desperate optimism? When Byler and Kabrina discover that they are two out of the many other children with these strange abilities, they set out with their friends Marklen and Johnny to save their world and the people in it from a fate more horrible than they can imagine. Standing alone, will they be able to defeat the Overseer and the even more sinister darkness that presses down on them?
