Im going to be honest- I dont get the outrage here. She took the animal in a perfectly legal, sporting and responsible manner, and posted a picture that has been the standard for hunters since Teddy Roosevelt, with a perfectly normal caption. This exact situation happens daily. So why is it so wrong all of a sudden? Then this buzzfeed guy, who has been to one park, is suddenly an expert on lion behavior? That the behavior of the wildly habituated ones that he saw in a tourist trap are indicative of how they behave in a hunting preserve? The deepest knowledge that I have of animal behavior comes from hunting. Ive hunted for deer once, and have had an occasional desire to do it again, and just the desire (and resultant research) has led to a greater understanding of animal behavior and biology than years of hiking and backpacking. A hiker doesnt have to understand the animals. He doesnt have to know the survival imperatives or the dangers the animal has to face. He just knows that deer (and lions) are pretty and you shouldnt shoot pretty things. And thats too bad. Animals exist in a world that few of us even begin to understand, and it seems like a shame to me to reduce them to wilderness lawn ornaments.
