Im going to give a mini-lesson in effective communication: When - TopicsExpress

Im going to give a mini-lesson in effective communication: When a friend shows herself or himself bothered by a certain behavior of another friend, or of oneself, the worst thing to do is to tell them to calm down or relax, or to ask her or him something like, What happened to YOU to make you so upset! When your friend is expressing annoyance with something or someone, she or he is looking for validation. Its not a pursuit of advice or counsel, or of criticism, nor even agreement. Just to be heard. Telling someone to relax or calm down is a not-so-subtle way of telling your friend her or his feelings are wrong. Feelings are never wrong. Listen, and demonstrate that you are listening.
