Im going to post this early, because its in my everyday conscience. THE FIFTH DAY OF JULY is a day of rest for some, after celebrating a very abstract notion, but a very valuable commodity indeed... Independence! Independence can be viewed in other diametrically opposed descriptions. Some cant wait to be independent, to get away from... from what? When kids do leave the nest, parents can feel independent, but they will more likely recognize it as a lonely void that can only be filled by a hug or a look from ones childs eyes... or a tender message on the phone. For me, the day represents the existence of a great man, a man who is at once a son, a brother and a father. A hero to all, the man who can fill that void with a hug, or a respectful and loving look of his eye. Every day, I think of my son. I wonder how his day is going. I hope hes wrestling playfully with his women, large and small, his wife and his daughter. I hope hes glowing with a pride, like I used to know, in their presence. I think about what other people have remarked about him, from his earliest days in school to the present. Compassionate, helpful, loving, a friend to all, a hero to many who need a hug or some attention. Ill be celebrating no differently on July the fifth than I do any other day of any year. Ill be glowing anew, a smile on my face... Heres to you, Dan, one of my favorite heroes. I love you. Happy birthday.
