Im going to start an amazing story about a dog here, giving short excerpts at a time. Hes Tonga, pictured in the 3rd photo down from here, as well as the two just below. (Pardon the out of focus, but it caught a certain relevant expression of his!) Dogs, of course, have all sorts of personalities, some apparently simple and sweet and some so rich and complex you wonder if they arent people in disguise. Tonga is one of those, but more than that, he bursts the bubble of dogs being paragons of faithfulness. Isnt a dog programmed to be loyal? Identify with his home and guarding it? Want to know what his folks are up to, sleep in his own soft bed (or, better, theirs) near his buddies, eat familiar cuisine? But, moreover, arent dogs famous for loving masters without a dime, out pure love? The Vedas even say so, with calendar art showing Lord Dattatreya accompanied by four dogs representing devotion. Well, the Lord never met Tonga. Whats even more surprising is that he loves every human being on the planet. Yet one fine day, for no apparent reason, he ran away with the cook. And no jilted lover ever felt worse than we did. We had to find out why. (To be continued!)
