Im gonna tell on my son a little bit here. Hes been pretty much exerting some willful behavior lately. Well, lets be real, its naughtiness. So, were at a park today and were by ourselves. He has been enamored lately with jumping from high spots on the climber down to the ground. Well, I am not cool with how high he prefers. So, I told him no. Absolutely he cannot jump from there. I stood in front of him with a hand halt and requiring that he listen to my voice and obey me. Oh my, he whined and hemmed and hawed, and put his leg up over the railing again. This went on for some time, but I was standing my ground. I climbed up there myself to redirect him to another part. After a few minutes, he got away and ran to that spot, only to jump off. Then he looked back at me and ran, knowing that he definitely did not obey. I promptly led a not-so-willing Josiah to a picnic table to discuss this issue and pattern Im seeing and require an apology and his subsequent actions to match his apology. I pulled out the iPad to communicate. After a lot of him kind of pitying himself, he wrote something I found pretty profound: Oh I am like a boy that so says but not does. I am being like a mocking bird. I mock by whistling one sound and then I go somewhere else. Daring fun is my worst temptation. I dont want to hand it over to you, so I do it anyway. We talked about that, and then I asked him out of curiosity what would be a good bird to be associated with then. He typed: Maybe a loon because of its clarity to name itself uniquely with its sound and then to be spotted as it really is--and that is prized character. Um, yeah, Id say so. Well see how this really plays out in the days ahead, but I like the explanation that I think we all can benefit from!
