Im in a psychologist led Dialectic Behavior Theory (DBT) class, and Im having an exciting time. Im learning to retrain my mind, and I am practicing being aware but not reacting to emotional responses and staying in the present. Ive only been to 3 weekly group meetings, but the program lasts as many as 26 weeks (6 months). So far, Ive learned how to stay focused on one thing that Im doing while just OBSERVING thoughts and emotions that come into my thoughts. I notice them and let them go, and then I refocus on what Im doing. Staying in the present is hard for me, and I find myself saying aloud, STAY IN THE PRESENT time and time again throughout the day. If I let my thoughts wander and they go to my past, then I will dredge up bad emotions. If I think too much about events in the future, I become anxious and worry and dredge up bad emotions. So this is what Im practicing this week: mindfully staying in the present. Ill keep you posted on my progress!
