Im increasingly confused over the nostalgia for non-CG practical effects. It seems to be rooted in the same animosity some people have towards CG characters in general, the feeling that gives rise to motion capture being touted by producers so people feel theres a more human element to digital characters (as if animators arent human and just press a giant red simulate emotions button). But when I look back at movies that had revolutionary effects - say Terminators final scenes with the skeletal T-800 - their stop-motion and puppet effects are utterly laughable and problematic in ways that are simply different. While bad 3D animation can look unblended and the animation can appear far too smooth for organic motion, practical effects tend to look shaky and unstable. The T-800 trying to smash through a door and pulling a pipe look so absurd, its impossible not to know theres a man who cant see what hes doing just operating a hand stick. And yet the comments still read The pre CG effects look great to this day.
