Im just about worn out on Common Core (looking for a teacher that wants to start a charter school in the area!!), but I thought this article was worth sharing. It seemed to give an unbiased description (is any description truly unbiased?) about Common Core (thanks to my source who emailed it to me and may wish to be nameless). I dont know enough about education or education standards to say if national standards are the way to go. It seems to me it isnt, just based on how diverse the state of NY is, I cant imagine nationwide standards truly being appropriate. It does point out that the increased testing that we may be seeing in NY is not necessarily an issue of Common Core, but of our state and local districts evaluating teachers. The point that does bother me is the increased difficulty of the standards. Already, before this was in place, our children were being pushed to learn things that they werent necessarily developmentally ready to learn (Lisa Bergin, help me out with links to this). I understand it is in comparison to successful standards found in other countries, but I think if you compared the ages of those students to our students, youll find they dont compare (from the previously posted Washington Post article, In the United States, students begin Grade 1 at the age of 5 or 6.In Finland, students begin Grade 1 at age 7.In Singapore, students begin Grade 1 at age 7 after two years of kindergarten. This is not an argument for starting school at a later age. Canadian students also begin first-grade at age 6. But we must recognize, especially given that Singapore’s standards were used to develop the Common Core, that we are asking our young children to engage in intellectual tasks for which they may not be developmentally ready.). Again, any teachers want to start a charter school? Let me know, I bet I can find you the students.
