Im not a big cryer. I didnt cry when the girls started school. Why? Because I trust their teachers. I trust the school. But dropping them off and picking them up from their last day ever at this school... That made me shed a few tears. Why? Because I LOVE their teachers. I love the school. We will greatly miss the community, the family, that is HSCS. The teachers have a big part in making it the special school it is. We have loved every teacher that every one of the girls has had. Each one was just right for them--hand picked by faculty that care about the success of each student and realize the different needs and personalities. Different teachers, different grades, and every time a success! Even teachers who have never taught my kids have said that they will miss them. And that says a lot about the teachers. They arent holed up in their classrooms, they are aware and watching all the kids. Syd is talking about changing her career aspirations that shes held onto since she was 5 and becoming a teacher (after the WNBA) largely because of the middle school teachers she has had. She commented the other day that she would like to maybe teach middle school because you can tell them stories but she may not have any good ones so she may just use Mrs. Steens because theyre funny AND because she said you get to know the kids better than in elementary. And I know that is not common. Her teachers, even though they have seen her only 56 minutes a day (or whatever it is) and even if its not her favorite subject have truly invested in her life. Even though shes a good kid and youre not going to see some radical difference in her life, they have impacted her in ways that Im sure they do not realize. The other girls have had fabulous teachers whove understood Alannas sensitivity--being understanding but not letting it get out of hand--and have seen past her reserve to the funny and unique girl she is. Kendalls teacher had both her and Alanna and remarked the other day that at the beginning of the year she saw the differences in them--Alannas shyness and reserve and Kendalls complete lack of that--but she said now she can see how similar they are, something we have always said. And she got Kendall, which can be hard. I love that they have gotten to know the girls as people, not just a student. I hope and pray that our experiences at our new schools will mirror these but that really is a great expectation.
