Im not a dirty hippie and dont hug trees, so why do I care? That will be a few responses. But, if the technology becomes so cheap and available that electric companies are not really viable, why would you not be self sustaining and not use coal fired or other traditional power sources? Thats why the government is stepping in to make sure that you keep on paying for the electricity to stay on in the cities.
