Im not getting much done today. Just cant get the memory of that horrible day 13 years ago out of my head. I was lucky. My company had a disaster plan (well that is what they made us think). Turns out they were making it up as they went along but they did a phenomenal job and because of them, I wasnt running through the streets like I saw on the news so many others having to do. They kept us safe until they felt we could leave. I had tons of gym clothes in my office so I was giving them out and I changed into them myself. my company, Centre, handed out water and ripped tshirts so that once we left we could have a wet cloth to hold up to our face to help us breathe. they had us all stick together and we walked from our office which was two blocks from the Trade centers, to our office in the village. It was about 11:30am and we walked together in the quiet and eerie streets of downtown which were covered in ash. None of us really spoke that much during our walk to the village. Once we reached our office in the village we made calls home and decided on our own when we wanted to venture home to NJ. a group of us from NJ walked to Penn Station. I was pretty clueless in that station but one of my co-workers that lived very close to me in NJ saw on the board of cancellations, one train to Matawan that said boarding. he grabbed me and pulled me through the crowds of tears and confusion and got us both onto the train with only a second or two to spare. we got on and the doors closed. we were packed like sardines and again, no one spoke much on the train. i called my husband to tell him Mike and I had managed to get on a train to Matawan and he raced out of the house to meet us there. for the next week we were glued to the tv as we watched and listened in horror to the accounts of that day. we lost colleagues, friends and loved ones that day. I still cant even believed it happened to us, America, the strongest country in the world! We cant live in fear but we must never forget! This is one small story from the thousands of stories that day. many stories were never shared............
