Im not going to take a view on the Michael Brown shooting case in Ferguson, since such a view should turn on particular facts of the case. BUT it seems remarkable how reluctant juries are to indict or convict cops. Violence /excessive force against civilians, esp. minorities, (not to mention corruption), does happen, whether from incompetence or racism or bad judgement or plain malignant behaviour. One is hard-pressed to think of a case where the apparent victims were well supported: King? Diallo? Grant? Ellison? The one case that does come to mind is Abner Louima, who was beaten and sodomised (with a broom handle) by NYPD officers. In the latter case, an aggressive emergency room technician, Magalie Laurent, at Coney Island Hospital contacted police internal affairs directly. Had she not done so, even this egregious case might not have been prosecuted.
