Im not one for football controversy, but holy crap. Equation of state, the Ideal Gas Law: Pv=nRT. For two different states under constant molar volume of the same gas: P1/P2=T1/T2 According to reports, the footballs lost 2PSI over the course of the game. The ambient temperature was 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The NFL requires balls to be pumped between 13 and 15 PSI prior to the game. Therefore: 15/(15-2)=T1/55F T1=63 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that, for temperature to have the effect seen with rational assumptions (neglect humidity and departure from ideality), the footballs had to have been pumped in at least 63 degrees Fahrenheit, which is less than room temperature, to have the effect claimed. Factoring in things such a humidity will result in an even higher drop in pressure. So, please stop.
