Im not posting this to in any way diminish the fact that police brutality and racism are huge problems. Im posting this because I believe in the distinction between the way we analyze a class (the police) and the way we hold individuals accountable for their actions. We all have the ability to rise far above the expectations of our class. Thats what happens when men confront other men who harass women on the street, or when privileged white people show up to rebuild poor communities in New Orleans, or when a cop realizes that he is there as much (if not more) to serve than to protect. I believe that wealth, power and privilege engender responsibility to dismantle the systems that give preferential treatment based on gender, wealth, ethnicity, etc. AND give comfort material aid to those who suffer under the unjust paradigm. We need more cops acting like Gaetano Acerra and fewer like Darrell Wilson. I think that this is what those of us who are outraged by the two recent grand jury verdicts are really asking for. No, that is what we are demanding.
