Im often asked if I think the Doncaster railway is more important than the airport link, or new trams more important than train signalling. But really, the last thing we need if politicians deciding on the run what should be built (or not built). As transport engineer William McDougall says here, we need to away from the sort of politicised approach that thrives in Victoria, that sees the Coalition and ALP promise competing new rail lines every election, and then build roads once theyre elected. It can sound rather dry to say we need a strong public transport planning authority, but its what delivers the sort of great PT you get in places like Zurich and Vancouver, and builds political consensus rather than disposable election promises. And its just one element of the Greens PT policy, a policy aimed at helping Victorians move around, not just winning votes before an election.
