Im one of ten children. People often say unintentionally - TopicsExpress

Im one of ten children. People often say unintentionally offensive things because it makes them uncomfortable like, You must be Catholic, right?! or, Did your parents even own a TV?!, or (the worst) Did your parents ever hear of birth control?! Because, of course, who would want ten kids? And while I force a smile and take the high road, every once in a while, someone says something unintentionally thoughtful because they just cant understand how she got through it, Your Mother must be a Saint! Yes. Yes she is. I constantly see people complaining about raising one or two kids, which I understand and I dont judge. I complain too. Raising even one is hard work. But my Mother really was, and remains, SuperMom. My father worked a lot of hours to put food on our table. And by the time I was 12, my mom was also running daycare out of our house, usually with at least 6-8 kids a day. She had her challenging days like everyone else, but she always got us to our practice, music lesson, or school on time, with our lunch in hand and a hug and kiss. Dinner was served, but you did not eat until she had checked your homework. We played every day and were not permitted to watch more than an hour of TV. Whether on time or late, we always sat in the front row at Church, in our Sunday best, every Sunday. She assigned us a summer reading list. She has her Masters in the French language and speaks it flawlessly (although shes humble and would never admit it). Good Housekeeping and the Philadelphia Inquirer have written articles about her. On each of our birthdays, my mom still weeps when she calls to sing us Happy Birthday and recalls the joyous memory of our births. We had to write a personal thank you for every gift we received for birthdays and holidays and mail it. She checked our spelling first, and edited the punctuation. She still writes us letters. And all ten of us went to college. She is my first call for parenting advice. Always has been, always will be. She continues to challenge me to be a better person. My mother and my father raised ten children because they loved us. Our births were a choice. She loves, loves, children. Thats why they had ten, and why she ran daycare for 25 years. She also taught CCD. My mothers birthday falls on Christmas Day. Do you know why? Because she IS a Saint, and the ultimate SuperMom, and shes beautiful. Happy Mothers day to the ultimate role model. To all of those mothers out there, if it feels overwhelming or you think you cant...my mom is proof that you are capable of so much more. Youll have some down days, but dont doubt or be too hard on yourself. Yes you can. Happy Mothers Day!
