Im posting about this again: In Michaels most recent video he speaks frankly about the challenges in finding psych meds that work. He addresses the reality of side effects and how balancing the benefit with the cost is difficult, but important. The issues surrounding mental health are complex and there is a lot more that we need to be doing as a society, but one of the biggest problems is non-compliance (patients not taking medication as directed). There have been many different studies done and basically bipolar patients are non-compliant 40 - 65% and depressed patients are shown to be non-compliant at three times that of the normal population.
