Im posting considerable fringe on this Veterans Day. In the midst of it I want to note that Im an Air Force Brat, and that my youth was shaped by The Cuban Missile Crisis, when we lived on a SAC base in Mississippi. I was six and seven and eight, and only realized later what my recurrent nightmares about telephones and loud sirens meant. Alerts were frequent and all the fathers would vanish for reasons I didnt really understand.The families worried together about safety and held onto one another. That much I do recall. Later, my father went off to Southeast Asia, only to finally die of Agent Orange exposure twelve years ago. We never did know what he did that put him in range of it; the official story didnt cover anything like that. War has always baffled me. Defense doesnt, but offense always does. I know its not black and white, but dammit, dead is dead, and you cant bring anyone back. I wish all those men and women who weve killed, all over the world, had lived long and happy and useful lives instead. I might say Rest in Peace, but I so much more believe in living in peace.
