Im posting photos I took yesterday at the celebration and papal Mass for seniors and grandparents in three installments. Preparing for a papal event; Papal Event I and Papal Event II. Part of the text is from todays blog (9-29): PREPARING FOR A PAPAL EVENT: I was in St. Peter’s Square Sunday morning for more than four hours, attending one of the most memorable events I have ever been to at the Vatican – and my list of such events is quite long! The day was exquisite, weather-wise – a day made in heaven for all those celebrating the day of the elderly and of grandparents. I arrived in the square just after 8 am and spent my time watching people assemble, taking photos, talking to people, and just drinking in the entire beautiful scene. All of a sudden, at one point I could feel something special was happening, just judging from the crowd’s behavior, and I looked up and saw Pope Benedict’s image on the big screens and ran over to a spot where I could take a good photo. As I lingered to get more photos, I saw Pope Francis arrive as well. One of the ushers then came over and, seeing my press credentials, asked me if I wanted to sit down and I said, why not? My credentials are not those of a photographer - which does give you more access in the square - so I willingly accepted the offer of a good seat. You’ll see from my photos on Facebook (and my videos are on Facebook as well as on Youtube – see links below) that I was able to get great photos (with my new Samsung camera). The only time it is difficult to see the Pope is when he is seated in his chair at Mass. It is againt the basilica façade and it is very difficult for the faithful to see the Pope when he is seated there and giving a homily (as you will see from my photo, taken through the scaffolding of the platform on which was the Vatican television camerman.) By the way, I have to take my hat off to these men! They were dressed, as they always are at papal events, in dark suits and they stood for well over 4 hours as the day changed from a pleasant and cool morning to the heat of the noonday sun! No chairs to sit on, no one to replace them, even briefly.
