Im re-posting this just to place it in peoples evening FB feed. Please help me and send your comments to the USFS by todays (5 Jan) deadline. You can copy and paste the paragraphs I provide below. We have an opportunity right now to have the land adjacent to our mountain cabin to be designated as a new Wilderness Area. The USFS is revising their forest management plan in NC and this includes both updates to timber management and also the addition of new designated Wilderness from a list of potential suitable wilderness tracts. The land surrounding Wesser Bald is on the list of potential sites, and this includes the land behind Roxannes and my cabin. The public comment period for this management update ends today. Please email your comments to the following address. If you like, you can simply paste the text Ive added after the address. Thanks! PS - to my MTB friends - while the Wilderness designation is at odds with the IMBA position on this USFS plan revision, this particular wilderness tract does not currently contain ANY suitable MTB trails, nor is it likely to in the future. Please amend your previous comments with this request - it does not contradict the IMBA/SORBA position related to other potential wilderness tracts in NC. Send email to: [email protected] Subject: re: Nantahala & Pisgah National Forests plan revision My Sample Text: 1. I would like to encourage the consideration of two new designated wilderness areas from the Inventory of Potential Wilderness - Wesser Bald (5703) and Tellico Bald (5451). Both of these tracts satisfy the USFS criteria for wilderness designation, have high recreational and scenic value due to their proximity to the Appalachian Trail, and they should be protected. These tracts are not suitable for either timber production nor selective timber harvesting, and at a minimum they should be protected by a management designation that will preserve their roadless and natural state, as requested by The Wilderness Society in their comments towards the management plan revision. 2. I would like to go on record in stating my opposition to the proposed plan to increase the old-school rotational logging areas to 700,000 acres. I would be in favor of reducing the proposed plan by at least 50% to a maximum area of 350,000 acres. Our society needs MORE forest lands to temper increasing carbon dioxide emissions, not less. Furthermore, our communities need MORE forests, trails and protected park lands for enjoyment and recreation, not less. Thank you for allowing us to voice our thoughts and concerns regarding this very important matter.
