Im really excited to have found out that a lot of the readers of my page are interested in how I make my jewellery, this is pretty awesome as it is what I am passionate about most of all. This sunny afternoon I am making up a customer order, its a bracelet to match a set I made a couple of weeks ago. For this I am using pink glass pearls 6mm and a few other complimentary beads selected for their size. The focal bead in the centre of the bracelet is a pale pink faceted bead also made of glass. Faceted just means it has been shaped to have regular sides. Crystals like this one are usually manufactured in the Czech Republic. They can be fire polished and come with a range of coatings. For this bracelet I dont want anything to detract from the simplicity of the bracelet so I am simply using a clear pale pink. The addition of the focal crystal is not only for its aesthetic, but also for its function. The crystal is holding the two strands together making a neater, more practical, bracelet. The very tiny finding (which is a name for a jewellery component) is a callotte cup, it looks a bit like a clam shell and works in the same way, it is a perfect way of finishing my bracelet as it hides the knot securely inside. My inspiration for this make is vintage 1920s when long simple strings of faux pearls came into fashion, its a period on jewellery history and fashion that I adore. The technique I have used to add the crystal in is based upon loop stitch, where take thread through the bead in opposite directions creating loops. This bracelet is very simple to make but getting the sizing right is another story. I actually made three bracelets to be able to get the focal perfectly centre. I also made one that was a little too big. I have found through my love of making jewellery that you need pretty hot problem solving skills to come up with something unique, pretty & practical. Over the next few days I will be showing you how and why I upcycle broken jewellery and show you some of the work I admire. This bracelet is sold but I can always make another, it is priced at £6.99. Love and peas Becky xx
