Im scanning in all the film from the shoot yesterday and Im a little emotional. As Im seeing the images pop up one roll at a time, I feel really proud. I havent had that in a long time...maybe ever. Maybe Im just being overly sensitive, as I tend to be, but Im thinking this is my first real work. All of the sweat and frustration and failure and half way succeeding the past 17 years in photography has gotten me to a point where this truly feels like me. I have a sense of ownership, like this is mine. This is my thumbprint and Ive finally stumbled onto a path where my real art begins. The art that I can maybe have an legit exhibit with or turn into a book one day. I still see things in the images that I can improve upon, but this path feels right. It combines so many struggles and thoughts and visual narratives that Ive been drawn to for much of my life, but havent been able to get it out of my brain and into a photo. I think these images finally cracked that open just a tiny bit and now I get to see how deep this rabbit hole goes. This project might take 5 years or 10 years, but my gut tells me that I can finally take ownership on a body of work. I gotta say thanks to my amazing wife, Andrea Howard who is nothing but supportive of me and all my weird ideas. So many people in the Nashville area have cheered me on over the years and just told me to keep going, even though I felt beaten down. Thank you Connie Richardson! Thank you Salome Steinmann.
